Relay dispatch board scheduling jobs against engineer skills, van stock and travel

Overview

About the project

Relay is a concept product for field service operations where the second visit is the real cost. Jobs get scheduled on availability alone, so an engineer arrives without the right skill or the right part and the whole thing repeats a week later. Relay schedules against skills, van stock and travel at the same time, and the engineer app works entirely offline because the places engineers work rarely have signal.

The challenge

Dispatch schedules on who is free, because that is the only thing the calendar knows. Whether the engineer holds the right certification, or whether the part is on their van rather than in the warehouse, is discovered on site — and a first-time fix becomes two visits and an unhappy customer.

Our solution

We scheduled against skills, van stock and travel together, so a job is only offered to an engineer who can actually complete it. The engineer app holds the day's work, asset history and forms offline and syncs when signal returns, and van stock is reconciled from parts used rather than counted at the depot once a week.

What we built

  1. 01Dispatch boardJobs scheduled against skills, van stock and travel at once.
  2. 02Offline engineer appThe full day's work available with no signal, syncing later.
  3. 03Van stockParts on each van tracked from usage rather than a weekly count.
  4. 04Asset historyEverything previously done to this asset, on site, offline.
  5. 05Proof of workPhotos, readings and a signature captured against the job.
  6. 06First-time fixMeasured per skill and per part, so the causes are visible.
  7. 07Live ETAThe customer's window narrowed as the day actually runs.
