Cartwright subscription overview with active subscribers, churn and monthly recurring revenue

Overview

About the project

Cartwright is a concept product for subscription retailers whose churn is driven less by the product than by the friction around it — a box arriving in the wrong week, an item the customer no longer wants, a pause that can only be arranged by email. It makes skip, swap, pause and change-of-date self-service, and it watches the signals that precede a cancellation so a save offer arrives before the decision rather than after it.

The challenge

Subscription churn is usually recorded as a cancellation reason typed into a text box at the very end, long after the decision was made. The events that actually predicted it — two skips in a row, a failed payment, a support ticket about delivery timing — sit in different systems and nobody joins them up.

Our solution

We made every subscription change self-service and logged as an event, so skips, swaps, pauses and date changes are visible in one timeline per customer. Renewal risk is computed from those events rather than from a cancellation form, and the retention offer fires while the subscription is still active, at the moment the risk crosses a threshold.

What we built

  1. 01Subscription timelineEvery skip, swap, pause and payment event on one customer record.
  2. 02Self-service changesSkip, swap, pause and reschedule without contacting anyone.
  3. 03Renewal riskScored from behaviour, not from a cancellation reason typed at the end.
  4. 04Retention offersFired while the subscription is live, at the moment risk crosses a threshold.
  5. 05Dunning recoveryFailed payments retried on a schedule that matches the customer's history.
  6. 06Cohort retentionWhat each signup cohort was still worth at month six and twelve.
  7. 07Mobile managementSkip the next box or swap an item from a phone in two taps.
