SERVICE OVERVIEW
Data Encryption Implementation for Secure Data Protection
Data encryption implementation services exist because enabling encryption in a cloud console is the easy part. The hard part is deciding which data needs protecting, where the keys live, who can use them and how you prove all of it to an auditor. Most UAE businesses already have some encryption running somewhere. Very few can hand a regulator a key inventory.
That gap now carries legal weight. Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, the UAE’s Personal Data Protection Law, lists encryption of personal data directly in Article 20. IBM’s 2024 Cost of a Data Breach report put the average breach in the Middle East at USD 8.75 million, among the highest of any region studied. Put those two facts side by side and it’s clear why encryption has moved from an IT ticket to a boardroom question in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Martian designs, builds and manages encryption across cloud, on-premise and hybrid environments for businesses in all seven emirates. This work sits inside our cybersecurity services practice. So the engineers designing your key hierarchy also understand the applications, databases and pipelines they’re protecting, which is where most encryption projects quietly go wrong.
Key Data Encryption Features
End to End Data Protection
We implement encryption mechanisms to secure data during storage and transmission. This ensures sensitive information remains protected from unauthorized access.
Secure Communication Channels
Encryption protocols are applied to APIs, websites, and internal systems. This protects data exchange across networks from interception and breaches.
Compliance Ready Encryption
Our solutions align with industry security standards and data protection regulations. This helps businesses meet compliance and legal requirements effectively.
Key Management and Access Control
We implement secure encryption key management and access policies. This ensures only authorized users can decrypt and access sensitive data.
What Do Data Encryption Implementation Services Actually Include?
They cover every step between “we should encrypt our data” and a working system you can audit. That means finding and classifying sensitive data, choosing algorithms and architecture, designing key management, deploying across your stack, testing it properly and then running the key operations month after month.
Each of the four layers below solves a different problem. Skip one and the others lose much of their value.
Encryption at Rest
This protects stored data. Databases, file shares, object storage, backups, laptops and mobile devices all fall here. On the database side we typically configure Transparent Data Encryption on SQL Server, Oracle or PostgreSQL, and storage-level encryption through AWS KMS or Azure Key Vault. Endpoints get BitLocker, FileVault or MDM-enforced device encryption. AES-256 is the default.
Backups deserve their own mention. Plenty of companies encrypt the production database, then ship nightly exports to a storage bucket that has never had encryption turned on. The backup becomes the easiest copy of the data to steal.
Encryption in Transit
Data moving between users, servers and third parties needs TLS 1.3 wherever the stack supports it, with TLS 1.0 and 1.1 switched off. That sounds basic. Yet legacy customer portals, payment callbacks and old SOAP integrations still negotiate outdated protocols across a lot of UAE infrastructure. Internal traffic is the other blind spot. Services talking to each other inside a VPC are often left unencrypted on the assumption that “internal” means safe, and mutual TLS between microservices closes that gap.
Application-Level and Field-Level Encryption
Some data needs protecting even from people with full database access. Emirates ID numbers, passport details, medical records and salary data are the usual candidates. Field-level encryption scrambles these values inside the application before they reach the database, so a database administrator running a query sees ciphertext. Tokenisation works in a similar way for card data and can shrink PCI DSS scope considerably.
Encryption Key Management
Encryption is only as strong as the handling of its keys. We design envelope encryption hierarchies (data keys protected by key-encryption keys), set rotation schedules, separate duties so no single admin can both access data and manage its keys, and decide between cloud KMS, dedicated HSMs, Bring Your Own Key or Hold Your Own Key models. More on that choice in the FAQs.
Why Do UAE Businesses Choose Martian for Encryption Work?
Generic encryption vendors sell a product and leave the architecture to you. Our approach starts from the data and the regulation, then picks tools to fit.
Key Management Gets Designed First
We map the key hierarchy before touching a single setting. Who can create keys, who can use them, who can destroy them, where they’re stored and how often they rotate. Those answers shape everything else. An encryption rollout without them tends to produce keys sitting in environment variables, Git repositories or the same storage account as the data. At that point the encryption is decorative.
Regulatory Mapping for Your Actual Jurisdiction
A mainland Dubai clinic, a DIFC wealth manager and an ADGM fintech each answer to different rules. The federal PDPL doesn’t apply inside the DIFC or ADGM, which run their own data protection laws. Health data carries separate federal requirements. Government suppliers face the UAE Information Assurance Regulation. We document which regime applies to which dataset and build the evidence pack around it, so your compliance team isn’t reverse-engineering the architecture during an audit.
Data Encryption Implementation Services Built for Arabic-Language and Legacy Systems
Here’s a problem few providers talk about. Field-level encryption breaks search. If customer names are stored encrypted, a call centre agent can no longer look up “محمد” in the CRM. Arabic text also expands in byte length under UTF-8, and encrypted values expand again, which overflows fixed-length columns in older ERP and core banking databases. We plan for both, using deterministic encryption or blind indexing where lookups matter and schema changes where column widths won’t hold. It’s unglamorous work. It’s also the reason encryption projects stall in week six.
Published AED Pricing
You’ll find phase-by-phase pricing below. Most UAE security firms ask you to book a call before discussing numbers. We’d rather you walk into that call already knowing the likely range.
How Does Our Encryption Implementation Process Work?
Five phases, each with its own deliverable. You can stop after any phase and keep the outputs.
Phase 1: Data Discovery and Classification
AED 12,000 to AED 25,000, typically two to three weeks.
We scan databases, file shares, SaaS platforms and cloud storage to find where personal and sensitive data actually lives, which is rarely where the documentation says. Each dataset gets classified by sensitivity and by the regulation it falls under. You receive a data map, a risk-ranked list of unprotected assets and a record of processing that feeds straight into your PDPL documentation.
Phase 2: Architecture and Key Management Design
AED 15,000 to AED 35,000, typically two to four weeks.
This is where algorithms, key hierarchy, rotation policy, access roles and hosting model get decided. For cloud workloads we also settle residency, usually AWS Middle East (UAE) in Abu Dhabi or Azure UAE North in Dubai, since keys and data should normally sit in the same jurisdiction. The output is a written architecture your internal team or auditor can review before a single change goes live.
Phase 3: Implementation and Migration
AED 30,000 to AED 120,000, typically four to twelve weeks depending on the number of systems.
Our engineers deploy encryption across storage, databases, network paths and applications, then migrate existing data into its encrypted form. Live systems get encrypted in staged windows with rollback plans, usually overnight or across weekends to avoid disrupting trading hours. During Ramadan we adjust schedules around reduced office hours and peak evening traffic for retail and delivery clients.
Phase 4: Testing, Validation and Evidence Pack
AED 8,000 to AED 20,000, typically one to two weeks.
We verify that encryption holds under real conditions. That includes checking TLS configurations externally, attempting data access with revoked keys, restoring encrypted backups to prove they’re recoverable and load testing to measure any performance impact. Everything is recorded in an evidence pack formatted for auditors, covering Article 20’s requirement that security measures are tested and evaluated.
Phase 5: Managed Key Operations
AED 3,500 to AED 12,000 per month.
Keys need rotating, certificates expire and staff leave. This phase covers rotation, certificate lifecycle monitoring, quarterly access reviews and incident support if a key is ever suspected of compromise. Many clients run this in-house after handover. Others keep us on because nobody internally wants to be the person who let a certificate lapse on a payment gateway at midnight during White Friday.
Which UAE Industries Need Encryption the Most?
Every business processing personal data in the UAE needs encryption in some form. Some sectors carry heavier obligations and higher stakes.
Healthcare sits at the top. Federal Law No. 2 of 2019 on the use of ICT in health fields restricts storing health data outside the UAE except in cases permitted by decision, and clinics connected to Dubai’s NABIDH or Abu Dhabi’s Malaffi platforms handle records that attackers value highly. Encryption here protects patients and also supports the clinic’s DHA or DoH licensing position.
Financial services and fintech firms answer to the Central Bank of the UAE, the DFSA in the DIFC or the FSRA in ADGM, plus PCI DSS v4.0 for anyone touching card data. Requirements 3 and 4 of PCI DSS deal directly with protecting stored card data and encrypting transmission, and tokenisation is usually the cheapest route to compliance.
E-commerce businesses running Telr, PayTabs, Tabby or Tamara integrations need clean TLS across checkout flows and properly secured API credentials. Real estate agencies and legal firms store thousands of Emirates ID and passport scans, often in shared drives nobody has audited. Education providers regulated by KHDA or ADEK hold student records that include minors’ personal data. Government suppliers and semi-government entities need alignment with the UAE Information Assurance Regulation or Dubai’s Information Security Regulation issued by the Dubai Electronic Security Center.
How Much Do Data Encryption Implementation Services Cost in the UAE?
Most UAE projects land between AED 35,000 and AED 180,000, with enterprise multi-cloud work going higher. Cost depends on the number of systems, how much existing data needs migrating and whether you need dedicated hardware security modules.
| Tier | Best For | What’s Included | Typical Investment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | SMEs on a single cloud or Microsoft 365 environment | Data discovery, storage and database encryption, TLS hardening, cloud KMS setup, evidence pack | AED 35,000 to AED 60,000 |
| Professional | Growing firms with several applications and regulated data | Everything in Essentials, plus field-level encryption, tokenisation, BYOK, key rotation policy, backup encryption | AED 75,000 to AED 160,000 |
| Enterprise | Banks, hospital groups, government suppliers, multi-cloud estates | Everything in Professional, plus dedicated HSM, HYOK, multi-jurisdiction mapping (PDPL, DIFC, ADGM), post-quantum readiness assessment | AED 180,000+ |
Managed key operations are billed separately at AED 3,500 to AED 12,000 per month depending on key volume and support hours.
Three things push a project toward the top of its range. Legacy systems without native encryption support need application changes. Large historical datasets take longer to migrate safely. And HSM hardware or cloud HSM subscriptions add their own licensing costs, which we quote at pass-through rather than marking up.
What Happens After Your Encryption Goes Live?
Encryption decays without maintenance. Certificates expire, keys pass their rotation dates, new applications get deployed without anyone checking whether they encrypt, and staff with key access change roles. Post-launch support covers all of this through scheduled rotation, automated certificate monitoring and alerts, quarterly access reviews and a short review whenever a new system handling personal data goes into production.
Crypto-agility is the longer-term concern. NIST published its first post-quantum cryptography standards (FIPS 203, 204 and 205) in August 2024. Attackers are already collecting encrypted data today with the expectation of decrypting it once quantum computing matures, a tactic known as “harvest now, decrypt later”. For a clinic storing patient records for decades or a bank holding long-term contracts, that timeline is relevant now. We build encryption so algorithms can be swapped without rebuilding applications, and Enterprise clients get a post-quantum readiness assessment showing which systems would need to migrate first.
Encryption also connects to the rest of your infrastructure. Our cloud solutions team handles residency and architecture, database architecture and management covers schema and performance work, and DevOps and infrastructure management builds key handling into your deployment pipelines so secrets never land in code.
What Does UAE Law Require When It Comes to Encryption?
The federal PDPL requires controllers and processors to apply technical and organisational security measures suited to the risk, and Article 20 names encryption and pseudonymisation specifically. It also requires measures for recovering data after a failure and for regularly testing that the security controls work. The law doesn’t prescribe a specific algorithm. It points to best international practice, which in practical terms means AES-256, TLS 1.2 at minimum (1.3 preferred) and documented key management.
Free zone entities follow a different map. The DIFC Data Protection Law No. 5 of 2020 and the ADGM Data Protection Regulations 2021 both carry their own security obligations and breach notification rules, and neither is replaced by the PDPL. Healthcare adds the federal health data law. Government-linked work adds the UAE Information Assurance Regulation, now overseen through the UAE Cybersecurity Council and TDRA framework, and Dubai entities may also fall under the DESC regulation.
Our data encryption implementation services produce documentation mapped to whichever of these applies. That usually means a control matrix linking each encryption measure to a specific clause, which saves your DPO days of work at audit time. We’re not a law firm, and for formal legal interpretation we’d recommend your legal counsel review the mapping.
FAQ
FAQs About Our Services
Looking to understand how Martian can support your digital transformation? Here are answers to common questions about our process, services, and expertise.
They’re the design, deployment and ongoing management of encryption across a business’s systems. That covers data at rest, data in transit, field-level protection for sensitive values and the key management that holds it together. A proper engagement ends with working encryption and the documentation to prove it to a regulator.
Yes, for personal data. Article 20 of Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 lists encryption and pseudonymisation among the security measures controllers and processors must apply. DIFC and ADGM entities follow their own data protection laws instead, which carry comparable security obligations.
How long does an encryption implementation project take?
Rarely enough to notice. Modern processors handle AES encryption in hardware, and TLS 1.3 actually connects faster than older versions. Field-level encryption on heavily searched columns is the exception, which is why we load test in Phase 4 before sign-off.
With Bring Your Own Key, you generate the encryption key and import it into the cloud provider’s key management service, which then uses it on your behalf. Hold Your Own Key goes further. The key never leaves your own HSM, and the cloud provider has to request it every time, so they can’t decrypt your data even under compulsion. HYOK costs more and adds latency. It suits banks, government suppliers and organisations with strict data sovereignty requirements, while BYOK is enough for most commercial businesses that want control over rotation and revocation.
